Reclaimed Timber & Sheet Materials

Reclaimed and surplus timber, OSB, plywood and MDF from UK sites. Offcuts, full lengths and sheet job lots — perfect for joinery, decking, formwork and self-builds.

Reclaimed and surplus timber is the second-largest surplus category in the UK by volume, and it hides some of the best long-term value on the site. Dense, slow-grown reclaimed oak, pitch pine and Douglas fir routinely test 30–50% stronger than modern C16 kiln-dried softwood — and it's cheaper. Genuine reclaimed 4×2 CLS commonly sells at £3–£5 per metre against £8–£10 new at Travis Perkins.

On the sheet-goods side, over-ordered OSB3, plywood and PIR-faced sheathing appear on SurplusBuilder every week from housebuilder clearance yards, particularly in the M62 corridor and the West Midlands. A full pallet of 18mm OSB3 typically sells at 40–55% below merchant list, and the certification (CE, FSC, structural grade) is identical to new stock — it's simply over-ordered.

For self-builders, joiners, cladders and shopfitters, this is the fastest way to cut a £4,000 timber budget to £1,800 without compromising on structural grade. Every listing below shows dimensions, moisture content where known, and treatment status.

Buyer's checklist

  • Bring a pin moisture meter (£30 online). Reject structural timber above 22% MC; joinery timber above 14%.
  • Reclaimed scaffold boards are BS 2482 grade — off-spec for scaffolding, prime for interior cladding and shelving.
  • Check for iron staining around old fixings — cosmetic on cladding, avoid on floors unless you like the character.
  • OSB and plywood delaminate when wet. Ask for photos of the storage location before buying a full pallet.
  • For structural reuse of reclaimed beams, budget £80–£180 for visual regrading to BS 4978 by a qualified grader.
  • Long lengths (5m+) of pitch pine and Douglas fir are almost impossible to buy new at sensible prices — grab them when listed.

Frequently asked questions

Is reclaimed timber kiln-dried?+

Some is, some isn't. Long-air-dried reclaimed oak and pitch pine is often more dimensionally stable than kiln-dried modern timber. Listings specify moisture content where known — for internal joinery target <14% MC; for external cladding <20% MC.

Can I use surplus timber for structural work?+

Surplus C16/C24 graded timber is fine for structural use if the grade stamp is intact and the piece is straight and defect-free. For reclaimed structural timber, arrange visual regrading to BS 4978 by a qualified grader (£80–£180 for a small job).

How do I check reclaimed timber for woodworm?+

Look for exit holes with pale, fresh dust around them (active infestation) versus dark, weathered holes (historic and inert). If in doubt, treat with a boron-based preservative before use, or reject anything from a damp storage environment.

Do reclaimed boards need machining?+

Most reclaim yards offer denailing, thicknessing and T&G machining for a small fee (£8–£15 per m² on top of the board price). Cheaper than buying new, and lets you specify custom widths that no current mill produces.

Can I use reclaimed timber over underfloor heating?+

Yes, provided the timber is kiln-re-dried to 8–10% MC and installed with a UFH-compatible adhesive on the manufacturer's guidance. Wider boards (>200mm) are more prone to gapping — engineered reclaimed-veneer boards are safer for wide UFH installations.

How much waste should I allow on a reclaimed timber order?+

10% for joinery, 15% for reclaimed flooring (denailing and end-splits), and 5% for structural timber if you're sizing to standard 2.4/3.0/3.6m lengths.

Are creosoted sleepers legal in a UK garden?+

Sleepers treated with creosote before 2003 are legal to reuse for landscape and retaining. Keep them away from vegetable beds, play areas and pond edges. Post-2003 alternatives use safer preservatives and are unrestricted.
