Surplus Electrical & Lighting

Surplus cable, consumer units, accessories and commercial lighting clearance. End-of-line and overstock from UK wholesalers and electricians.

Electrical surplus is a wholesaler's game — CEF, Rexel, YESSS and City Electrical Factors all clear stock quarterly, and much of it now flows through SurplusBuilder. New surplus 2.5mm² twin-and-earth cable, LED panels, MK and Hager consumer units, socket accessories and commercial lighting appear at 30–60% below trade list.

For 18th Edition compliance, always confirm the batch date on the item's certification label — surplus stock from before June 2022 pre-dates the AFDD requirement for high-risk circuits and cannot be used without additional protection. Everything post-June 2022 is fully compliant.

Lighting surplus splits into two: end-of-line commercial LED (great for garages, workshops, HMO commons) and reclaimed industrial pendants (bar/restaurant/loft fit-out). Both segments are active every week.

Buyer's checklist

  • Confirm certification date on consumer units — pre-June 2022 stock predates AFDD requirements.
  • Cable drum offcuts under 25m sell at ~60% of full-drum rate — great for small rewires.
  • LED panels: check the driver is included and warranty is transferable.
  • Reclaimed pendants often need a modern IP44+ rewire for kitchens/bathrooms — budget £30–£60 per fitting.
  • MCBs and RCBOs are interchangeable within the same brand family — confirm terminal size before buying.
  • For commercial fit-out surplus, colour temperature (3000K/4000K/5000K) matters more than lumen output for consistency.

Frequently asked questions

Is surplus electrical stock safe to install?+

New surplus stock carries the same CE / UKCA marks as full-price equivalents and is safe to install by a qualified electrician. Always check certification on the product label, confirm the batch date is post-current-regulation, and never install anything that has been previously installed and removed.

Can I use reclaimed light fittings in a wet zone?+

Only if refitted with a modern IP44+ compliant transformer and driver, and the fitting itself is IP-rated for the zone. Original bare-bulb pendants are Zone 3 or outside-bathroom only.

Are surplus consumer units 18th Edition compliant?+

Stock manufactured post-June 2022 meets the current AFDD requirement for high-risk circuits. Older units are usable but need a separate AFDD device — check the batch date and manufacturer datasheet.

How do I buy cable by the drum vs by the metre?+

Full drums (50m, 100m) offer the best per-metre price. Offcuts under 25m sell at ~60% of full-drum rate. For a small rewire or single circuit, a drum offcut is cheaper than a full drum with waste.

Do surplus LED panels come with warranty?+

New surplus retains the manufacturer warranty (typically 3–5 years for commercial LED) when the driver and label are intact. Register the warranty in your name at first install if the manufacturer offers online activation.

Can I mix brands in a consumer unit?+

No — MCBs, RCBOs and RCDs must be from the same manufacturer family as the CU body. Mixing brands invalidates the unit's Type Testing certificate. Surplus lots usually list the CU with matching accessories.
